In addition to going on vacation and having a lot of fun this summer, we also did a lot of behind-the-scenes work which is the necessary, but boring, part of running a company. The main item we wanted to share with you is that we incorporated and are now officially Little J Creations LLC.

What does this mean to you? Not much. You will notice the name on labeling and on the website, but everything else will remain SoapPrizes. So why not SoapPrizes LLC? We have some very specific plans for growth over the next few years that include new product lines under a different name. Calling the company Little J Creations, LLC allows us flexibility to execute our plan.

In other news, we are already gearing up for the holiday season. We are happy to be returning to Christmas on the Hill over Thanksgiving weekend. We will give you the details as the event approaches.

In my other job, exactness and perfection are the goal. If you use the wrong character when writing HTML code, the website will not work properly. Size and location of images are measured in dots (pixels). For this reason, I am on a constant quest to to get things just right before delivering the product to the client.

When we started making soap, I obsessed over every little bubble left behind and it almost drove me crazy. I was talking about this issue with my friends one night, and Jessica introduced me to something that truly changed how I look at things. It’s the concept of Wabi-sabi. Here is a great explanation of Wabi-sabi:

“Wabi-sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is a beauty of things unconventional. … The closest English word to wabi-sabi is probably “rustic”. … Things wabi-sabi are unstudied and inevitable looking. .. unpretentious. .. Their craftsmanship may be impossible to discern. ”
- “Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers”, Leonard Koren

She went on to say that people are drawn to handmade products due to the fact that each piece has more character than anything made by a machine. This really has changed the way I look at our soaps. Yes, I still strive for perfection, but I don’t stress out when we leave behind a bubble or a layer doesn’t set up exactly right.

Wabi-sabi has given me a new appreciation of how I view everything from handmade products, to nature and even old abandoned buildings. Every one of our soaps is unique, so we hope that you can embrace Wabi-sabi and enjoy them as much as we do.

The past 7 days have been pretty amazing around here and we wanted to share. In the beginning of May, we entered a Pinterest Business Pitch Contest run by the Governor of Maryland. If interested you can take a look at our entry. A few weeks ago we received an invitation to a Governor’s reception to learn who won the contest. No way we were going to miss an opportunity like that.

Julia and I headed to Annapolis on May 31, just expecting to sit in the crowd and learn who won the contest. While SoapPrizes did not win, Julia was awarded a Governor’s Citation for being one of the 3 youngest entrepreneurs to enter. This proud mom watched while she went up and told Governor O’Malley about SoapPrizes. Such a fun day.

The other news that we have been sitting on for awhile now is that Julia is the co-winner of the Youth Entrepreneur of the Year Award presented by Frederick County Entrepreneur Council. We attended the awards dinner on June 7th. It was a fun evening and great to see some much entrepreneurial spirit in Frederick County. A lot of talent in that room that we can learn from for future growth. So overall, it was an incredible 7 days for Julia and SoapPrizes.

A good friend of ours posted a picture of one of our ducky soaps that she purchased and is now taking up residence on her bathroom sink. This picture of our soap “in the wild” got us thinking it would be fun to do a little contest. So here we go.

Up for grabs is a half dozen of our cupcake soaps, one of each “flavor.” That’s enough to share with your friends or keep you clean for a long time. We are going to make you work for it though. We want to see a picture of your favorite soap in its natural environment at home. No taking pictures at a store, please. It does not have to be a SoapPrizes soap, though we would love to see them.

Tag or post your picture on our Facebook page, leave a comment here with a link to your photo or email it to us at littlej@soapprizes.com (we will post these to Facebook and Pinterest). We will randomly select one photo from all the entries as the winner. Here is where we sweeten the pot. You can get extra entries by doing one or more of the following:

Like our Facebook page
Follow us on Twitter
Follow our Pinterest boards
Sign up for our newsletter

If you are currently doing any of the above, you will automatically get extra entries upon posting a photo. You have until Friday, February 10 at 8:00 pm to enter. We will announce the winner Saturday, February 11 at 12:00 noon. We will make arrangements with the winner to get the prize via drop-off or shipping. You need not be local to play.

Can’t wait to see your photos and good luck!
